nor:den has in cooperation with Alexandra Morgana, 1963, arhitect m.a.a, placed in Denmark, created at cooperation with the organization Kiburanga Women Self Help Group that are placed in the Kuria district in Kenya. Here did Alexandra start her cooperation in 2011. Alexandras idea was to give the women, where most of them are illiterate, an income, by get them to crochet blankets. Fieldwork pays 200 KES a day, for 12 hours of work. The women gets 1.500 KES for each blanket they make, and they can do the job at home and when they are out. All they have to do, is to bring their crochet needle and yarn. Alexandra has earlier voulenteered at Bujoras texstile school in the Mwanza region in Tanzania. Here came the idea of teaching the women in Kenya about the technique behind the blankets. "The technique is simple and the production tools, crochet needle, needle and scissor are a small investment to start a production in Kiburanga. The first blankets are made from a manuel with the drawings of have the women should crochet 1 to 1 without having to read. I send yarn and tools together with manuels and got my first 3 blankets home." - Alexandra Morgana Alexandra has later on been to Kiburanga to help the women get better. Then when nor:den started their production in Kiburanga, it was time for Alexandra to go to Kiburanga and teach the technique and to hire more women. Since then the women has made som beautiful and unique blankets, that are sold by nor:den. The blankets on this site are marked Handmade By Kiburanga Women. The income will be used to keep nor:den's production of design blankets going. Alexandras own blankets are also unique and made of good quality yarn. They are marked Alex Morgana Handmade unika. It takes 40 - 60 hours to make on blanket, depending on the size, technique and yarn. It is marked on each blanket, who made it. All blankets most be handled at the same way. It most be washed at a wool programme at maksimum 30 degrees. Then press it so it wont curl and afterwards have it airdried. For more information about Kiburanga Women Self Help Group.
